TRADING FROM ZERO · EPISODE 5

Stock Market Trading for Beginners

Shares, dividends, and how to buy and sell, explained by Slav, Max and a bicycle helmet.

Episode summary

Slav is ready to trade stocks, and he's bought a helmet in case the market crashes. Max explains what a share really is, using the fictional company Sunny Bikes: owning ten shares means owning a tiny part of the business, not ten bicycles.

They cover how prices create unrealized and realized gains and losses, how dividends work (and why they are never guaranteed), where stocks are traded, how to choose a broker, the difference between real shares and CFDs, market and limit orders, bid/ask spreads, and three trading styles: long-term investing, swing trading and day trading.

Key lessons

  • A share is ownership of a small part of a company, not its products.
  • A gain is unrealized until you sell. The green number on your screen isn't a promise.
  • Dividends are not a salary. Companies can cut or stop them, and a dividend doesn't erase a falling price.
  • Shares and CFDs are different products. A CFD tracks the price but gives you no ownership. Read what the buy button actually buys.
  • A market order fills at the best available price; a limit order sets your price but might not fill.
  • Submitted is not the same as filled. Always check your order status.
  • The spread (the gap between bid and ask) is a cost, even with "commission-free" trading.
  • Pick a trading style that fits your time, knowledge and ability to handle losses, not the one with the most exciting screens.
